Cougars finish 0-10 after 43-0 loss to Sherando
Last summer, Kettle Run High School’s new football coach Jeff Lloyd looked into a youthful crowd of lanky prospects. Nearly all were sophomores and freshmen. Juniors seemed like an endangered species, and seniors were extinct.
Lloyd braced himself for an interesting season, one he knew would add to his resume as a football coach, even if it didn't help his won-loss record.
“This season has been very weird for me. Where I come from, I’m used to winning,” said Lloyd, reflecting back at his tenure at Manassas Park High with a hint of nostalgia. “I’ve been 10-0 plenty of times, but this is the first time I’ve ever been 0-10. That in itself has been hard for me, much harder than I thought it would be.”
The Cougars completed their inaugural season on Nov. 7 with a 43-0 loss to Sherando, thus ending up 0-10.
Not having seniors translated into size mismatches almost everywhere on the field. While many first-year schools opt for a JV schedule, Kettle Run took its lumps in getting outscored 447-38.
Cougar Run's bid for a historic first win did not have much of a chance against Sherando (7-3), even with the Warriors' University of Virginia-bound quarterback Ross Metheny sidelined. The Warriors led 23-0 at halftime.
“Offensively, we didn’t play well at all. Sherando was really able to run the football at our edges,” Lloyd said, sounding irritated as he discussed the toll that inexperience has had. “It’s frustrating, mainly because it’s not about the preparation you put in, or the team’s morale, or desire to win. It doesn’t matter how badly we want it, we have constantly been physically outmatched, and when you’re less physical than your opponents, it doesn’t matter how bad you want it, you’re going to lose...”See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
